CAUTIONARY TALES FOR BOYS AND GIRLS
by John Hay-Mackenzie
Pier 9
hb $29.95

In the great tradition of Struwwelpeter (Straw Peter), Hay-Mackenzie offers moral tales of behaviour and consequences for contemporary children. Though not quite as gruesome as “The Story of Little Suck-a-Thumb”, whose thumbs were cut off by a roving tailor with giant scissors, still Hay-Mackenzie manages to supply suitably ghastly punishments for his unsavoury characters. Best of all, the author illustrates his nutty rhymes with watercolours of wacky looking soft toys.

OOPS!
by Jean-Luc Fromental and Joelle Jolivet
Abrams
hb $29.95

By the creators of “365 Penguins”, a tale of mishaps and consequences as a feckless family stumble their way through Paris trying to get to the airport in time for their holiday flight. This may sound like your worst nightmare, but it is actually filled with cuteness-a-go-go, not to mention a very surprising and happy ending.
